One day, a man appears before Heizo's swordsman friend, Kishii Samanosuke. He says he has been entrusted with a short sword by an elderly monk named Soen. When asked what happened, the man reveals that he encountered Soen while traveling, gasping for breath, and entrusted him with the sword and a dying request. "So, Soen-bou cares about me that much..." Samanosuke, a man of pure heart, is deeply touched that the man has been there to watch over his old friend's passing, even offering a memorial service and delivering a memento, and offers to treat him wholeheartedly. The traveler is actually a thief named Jirokichi of Myojin, but Jirokichi is also touched by Samanosuke's sincere devotion. The two share a drink at Gotetsu. "Could that man be...?" the spy, Omasa, recognizes Jirokichi's face. During an investigation under Heizo's orders, a burglary plot by Takebei of Kushiyama and his gang comes to light.
