His cousin Tamiko, who was two years older than Masao, was raised as if they were real siblings.
The two teenagers eventually fell in love, but when Masao entered junior high school, Tamiko was married off to another family and passed away with the love letter she had received from Masao as they were leaving her in her heart.
Masao planted wild chrysanthemums, which they both loved, around Tamiko's grave, and even after they got married he never forgot about Tamiko for a single day.
