Tomishima Matsugoro, a rickshaw driver who sleeps at the Uwajimaya lodging house in Furusenba, Kokura, is nicknamed "Muhoumatsu" (Outlaw Matsu) for his courage and quick temper. One day, he takes an injured and crying child (Toshio) into his house and falls in love at first sight with the widow Yoshiko. One night during the Gion Festival, Matsugoro pours his secret love into the Gion Taiko drums and performs a magnificent display.
