Sugata Sanshiro learned judo from Ozone Shunpei in Aizu, and then went to Tokyo to study under Monma Saburo of the Shinmei Katsasaryu school, where he happened to meet Yano Shogoro.
Seeing Yano's strength, Sanshiro became his apprentice and lived at Ryushoji Temple, and after a year and a half, none of the nine disciples could match Sanshiro.
