"Music for Anxiety Relief - Oxytocin Activation"
■Many modern people have concerns about anxiety and self-esteem.
In today's society, which is said to be a stressful one, it is said that many people suffer from anxiety and low self-esteem.
People of all ages are using multiple social media platforms extensively, and human relationships are becoming more tenuous and complicated. At the same time, the social unrest and economic hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are making people feel even more anxious.
In fact, according to a mental health survey conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the percentage of Japanese people with depressive symptoms was 7.9% in 2013, but in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure had risen to 17.3%, approximately 2.2 times higher.
■We also focus on HSP, which is said to be common among Japanese people.
Recently, many books related to HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) have been published and the subject has been receiving a lot of media attention.
HSPs, sometimes referred to as "sensitive people," are highly sensitive and have a high ability to perceive and process information from their senses of hearing, sight, touch, and smell. It is said that a relatively high percentage of Japanese people fall into the category of HSP due to their national character.
HSP is not a "disease" but a "temperament," and it allows people to notice subtle changes that normal people cannot, which has various benefits in work and life.
However, it seems that the amount of information that is input can be so great that it can leave people feeling mentally exhausted and make life difficult, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and a decrease in self-esteem. This CD was therefore produced as a support tool to help improve these conditions.
■Supports the secretion of oxytocin, a brain chemical that relieves anxiety and improves interpersonal relationships.
This time, we focused on oxytocin, a chemical in the brain, as a way to deal with anxiety and stress.
Oxytocin was discovered as a substance that stimulates labor, but subsequent research has shown it to have a variety of other effects.
Oxytocin is also known as the "love hormone" or "happiness hormone," and it is said that increasing its secretion brings us a sense of happiness and reduces anxiety.
It has also been reported to have the effect of increasing trust in others, which can be said to be beneficial for building good relationships.
This CD was produced and recorded with music that supports the secretion of oxytocin, based on past research data, under the supervision of Dr. Kobayashi Shuzo (Director of Shonan Kamakura General Hospital), a medical doctor who also serves as a visiting professor at a music university.
■Effectiveness was verified by collecting saliva and urine samples.
To examine the increase or decrease in oxytocin (love hormone) and cortisol (stress hormone) before and after listening to the music created in this study, saliva and urine samples were collected from the subjects and analyzed by a pharmaceutical company.
In four out of five people whose saliva was collected, listening to music reduced cortisol levels.
Cortisol is a substance known as the "stress hormone," which is secreted in increasing amounts due to physical and mental stress. The fact that cortisol levels decreased in most subjects suggests that the music on this CD may have effects such as "stress reduction" and "relaxation."
Additionally, in three out of three subjects whose urine samples were collected, listening to music increased oxytocin levels (creatinine corrected).
By increasing levels of oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," it has been shown that the music on this CD may have the effect of increasing positive emotions such as happiness and easing anxiety.
